Seppuku is a Japanese term that indicates a ritual in ancient Japan for compulsory or voluntary suicide, an exclusive privilege of the samurai caste. It was the way in which the samurai avoided capital punishment, expressed grief for the death of their lord or protested for an injustice suffered.

This ritual was the highest form of respect for the end of a Samurai when it was not possible to fulfill the ambition of dying on the battlefield serving one's ideal.
