Alpha-lipoic acid is an essential enzyme cofactor present in tissues, where it acts as an antioxidant in both its oxidized and reduced forms. It participates in the synthesis of glutathione, ensures the functionality of vitamin E, and acts on an enzyme essential for energy production, pyruvic acid decarboxylase, which catalyzes the transition from glycolysis to the Krebs cycle, promoting energy availability.
