The katana was the faithful sword of the samurai, forged with an ancient technique and tempered in the blood of a thousand battles to defend the honor of those who wore it at their side. It was worn on the belt (obi) with the edge facing upward, so that it could be quickly unsheathed with deft movements and without damaging the blade's edge.
The weapon was usually carried by members of the warrior class, along with the wakizashi, a second, shorter sword. Carrying a katana was a symbol of power and respect for samurai throughout Japan.
